While working with The Charlotte Observer last week, I ran into a problem I hadn’t given much thought to for our newspaper sites – Keyword Cannibalization.
I had asked SEOmoz about the best way to structure the title tags for the hundreds (if not thousands) of section fronts for our markets.
One of the things he mentioned was avoiding keyword cannibalization. For example, many of our existing sites they have a homepage title like: “Newspaper.com | News, Sports, Weather, Jobs, Classifieds”
The problem with that is for the actual sections that contain “jobs” or “weather”. The keywords have been at the very least diluted, and at the worst cannibalized.
So, for CharlotteObserver.com, we went with a very generic title on the homepage of: “Charlotte Observer | Charlotte, NC – North Carolina’s Local News Leader”
The idea is that if someone is searching for “charlotte jobs”, we want them to find the jobs section, not the homepage.
